Four layers. Each one earning its place.
Shell is a precisely sequenced system. Each layer builds on the last — decoupling sound, absorbing vibration, blocking transmission, and treating the acoustics of the room.
Built in four layers. Installed with basic tools.
Each layer of Shell has a specific job. Together they create a wall that blocks noise from entering, absorbs echo inside the room, and finishes beautifully — without a plasterer, without specialist trades, and without permanent commitment.
Timber frame and mineral wool
A timber stud frame is built against the existing wall — brick, block, or existing stud — and packed with Rockwool RW3 acoustic mineral wool at 60kg/m³. The higher density of RW3, compared to standard thermal insulation, significantly improves sound absorption at bass frequencies. RW3 carries a Euroclass A1 fire rating and a thermal conductivity of 0.034 W/mK. The mineral wool fills the cavity, adding mass and density that soaks up vibrational energy before it reaches the next layer.
iKoustic MuteClip® isolation system
iKoustic MuteClip® isolation clips are fixed directly to the timber frame. The clip's patented dual-density silicone creates a physical standoff — decoupling the new wall from the existing structure and dramatically reducing the contact points through which vibration can travel. The harder outer silicone absorbs impact energy; the softer inner silicone isolates residual vibration at each fixing point. MuteClip® channels span between clips at 400mm centres, providing the fixing substrate for the plasterboard without any contact with the original wall. The combined clip and channel system adds just 40mm of depth.
15mm acoustic plasterboard
A single layer of 15mm acoustic plasterboard is screwed into the MuteClip® channel — never into the wall behind. The board adds mass and creates a second sound barrier in the system. A critical 2–5mm perimeter gap is maintained around every board edge, ensuring the decoupled frame is never acoustically bridged back to the surrounding structure. Bridging this gap — even at a single point — would short-circuit the isolation and significantly reduce performance. Acoustic plasterboard carries a typical fire rating of A2-s1,d0.
12mm Felted PET felt — the finish layer
The final layer is what makes Shell different from every other soundproofing system. 12mm recycled PET felt panels or tiles are applied directly over the plasterboard, replacing the traditional skim coat and paint finish entirely. Panels can be brad nailed for a fully removable installation — ideal for tenants or anyone who wants flexibility. Tiles can be adhered for a permanent finish. Either way, the PET felt provides an NRC rating of 0.65, acoustically treating the room as well as soundproofing it, and finishing the wall in a material that is beautiful, tactile, and made from 100% recycled content. No plasterer required.
All four layers. In one diagram.
The full system adds approximately 115–145mm to a wall depending on stud depth. The PET felt finish sits flush once panels are installed.
PET felt. The finish that makes Shell possible.
Traditional soundproofing systems end with plasterboard — then require a plasterer to skim and a decorator to paint. That adds cost, time, and trades to every project. It also makes the wall permanent. PET felt changes all of that.
